Speaking of a bell-cow role, Chuba Hubbard completely displaced Miles Sanders to earn the RB1 job last season. Hubbard was regularly seeing 15-20 touches (often 20+) per game during the back half of the year. Given the overall offensive environment, it was tough for anyone to deliver meaningful fantasy performances, but Hubbard was respectable as a starter. In seven games as the lead back, he was an RB1 in two games and an RB2 in two games.
Hubbard is currently the favorite to reprise this RB1 role to start the season as Brooks is eased back from injury. While it's likely that he is eventually surpassed by Brooks, Hubbard can certainly provide some valuable weeks to start the year.
Drafters seem to understand this as Hubbard is drafted as an RB5 (RB52 overall). There isn't much sense in adding Hubbard to rosters unless you take some high-upside swings on rookies (or breakout candidates) whose production will likely come later in the year. When drafting Hubbard, hope for some quality weeks to start the season, but don't expect much down the stretch.

Panthers eyeing Week 3 or 4 for Jonathon Brooks Won't play in the preseason By: Mike Krueger | Sat Aug 3, 1:07 pm
| | Panthers HC Dave Canales said rookie RB Jonathon Brooks (torn ACL) won’t play this preseason.
Canales said Week 3 or 4 of regular season would be “great” for a return. They don’t want to rush him and this is about what they expected on injury timeline when they drafted him. (Cameron Wolfe on Twitter)
FFToday's Take: Brooks has been the first running back selected from the Panthers in early drafts but expect his ADP to take a hit with this news. Even if he returns early in the season, he's not likely to be up to full speed until later in the year. Chuba Hubbard and Miles Sanders are expected to be the main ball carries in Week 1 with Hubbard holding the most fantasy value.
| Rashaad Penny lands on reserve/retired list Carolina still solid at RB position By: Mike Krueger | Tue Jul 30, 9:37 am
| | The #Panthers have placed running back Rashaad Penny on the reserve/retired list. (Ian Rapoport on X)
FFToday's Take: Carolina has rookie Jonathon Brooks (ACL recovery), Chuba Hubbard and Miles Sanders all competing for running back touches leaving Penny the odd man out. Penny barely saw the field last year in Philadelphia (12 touches, 38 yds) and after six years in the league, it appears his career is over.
