2024 Outlook
Depth Chart
Austin Ekeler finished as the RB24 in 2023 after being the RB1 in 2022 and RB2 in 2021. Fantasy managers will remember Ekeler's 2023 season as a massive bust, considering he was a first-round selection in almost every draft. However, what's often forgotten is that Ekeler started the season strong with a 164-total-yard game and a touchdown in Week 1 before sustaining a high ankle sprain late in the contest. That injury has been a disaster for countless running backs in recent seasons and it really derailed Ekeler's 2023 season.

Ekeler missed the next three games before returning in Week 5, a game in which he rushed for just 27 yards on 14 carries. While he maintained a streak of 14 to 20 carries for five straight weeks, Ekeler never rushed for more than 70 yards during that stretch. From that point on, Ekeler's average carries per game dropped to fewer than 11, and he scored just one touchdown while failing to reach even 50 yards as a receiver in any of his final 10 games.

Sure, Ekeler's body had sustained a ton of hits over the previous few seasons, but it's also very possible that he was still dealing with the lingering effects of that Week 1 high ankle sprain. This uncertainty and the change of scenery from Los Angeles to a more competitive backfield in Washington have led to Ekeler dropping from a Round 1 pick in 2023 all the way down to being a borderline top-100 pick here in 2024.

The Washington offense is an interesting one, but could also be a limiting factor for a player like Ekeler. While the team is expected to be more electric with new quarterback Jayden Daniels at the helm, rushing quarterbacks have historically relied much less on their running backs in the passing game than traditional pocket passers do. Justin Herbert had some athleticism but still relied heavily on Ekeler in the passing game throughout their time together. We shouldn't expect anywhere near as much of that from Daniels in his rookie season.

Still, Ekeler's price tag makes him a potential value in 2024. He has to fend off Brian Robinson Jr., who has shown himself to be a competent NFL runner, but Ekeler is a much more dynamic player and one that the new Commanders regime voluntarily brought in this offseason. Look for him to lead what will almost certainly be a split backfield, but he should get the majority of the touches that fantasy managers are most excited about, both in the passing game and near the goal line.

Injury Austin Ekeler placed on IR, concussion
Out 4 games
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Nov 30, 4:00 pm

Washington Redskins
The #Commanders are placing RB Austin Ekeler (concussion) on injured reserve. He’s out four games. (Tom Pelissero on X)

FFToday's Take: Ekeler was already ruled out for Week 13 but this isn't great news for his long-term health. The earliest he could return would be Week 18 given the Commanders have a bye next week. In other words, he's safe to drop from your roster. Brian Robinson Jr. is expected to play this week against the Titans and we should also see Jeremy McNichols in a backup role.

Injury Brian Robinson Jr. Out again with hamstring injury
Missed practice on Friday
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Nov 8, 4:00 pm

Washington Redskins
Commanders RB Brian Robinson Jr. was ruled out for Week 10 vs. the Steelers. (Adam Schefter on X)

FFToday's Take: Robinson was limited in practice Wednesday and Thursday then sat on Friday before being ruled Out for Week 10. With Robinson out last week, the Commanders used three running backs including Austin Ekeler, Jeremy McNichols and Chris Rodriguez Jr. Ekeler will work as the lead back but all three should get touches capping their upside.

Injury Brian Robinson Jr. Inactive for Week 9
Hamstring injury
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Nov 3, 11:20 am

Washington Redskins
Commanders RB Brian Robinson Jr. is inactive today. Commanders expected he would be able to play but the pre-game warmup did not go well. (Adam Schefter on X)

FFToday's Take: Over the weekend, it seemed like Robinson was on track to play but his pre-game workout didn't satisfy the coaches and trainers. With Robinson out, the Commanders will lean on Austin Ekeler and Jeremy McNichols to handle the running back work. Ekeler is a viable RB2 option, especially in PPR leagues while McNichols is a low-end Flex option.

Injury Brian Robinson Jr. downgraded to Out for Week 6
Missed practice all week with knee injury
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Oct 12, 4:00 pm

Washington Redskins
Commanders RB Brian Robinson Jr., who hadn’t practiced this week due to a knee injury, was downgraded to out for Sunday’s game at Baltimore. (Adam Schefter on X)

FFToday's Take: Robinson didn't practice all week so this move isn't a huge surprise. With Robinson out, expect Washington to turn to Austin Ekeler and Jeremy McNichols at running back against the Ravens. Ekeler is a viable RB2, especially in PPR leagues while McNichols will be a boom-or-bust TD dependent option in deeper formats.

Injury Brian Robinson Jr. will be a gametime decision
Trending in the right direction
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Oct 4, 12:21 pm

Washington Redskins
Dan Quinn said RB Austin Ekeler has cleared the concussion protocol and will be good for Sunday. He added that RB Brian Robinson Jr. is trending in the right direction, but he'll be a game-time decision. WR Noah Brown - OUT DE Clelin Ferrell - OUT (Nicki Jhabvala on X)

FFToday's Take: Robinson missed practice Wednesday and Thursday with a knee issue but did return on Friday. Even if he does play, it wouldn't be surprising to see Ekeler get a little more work than usual given Robinson won't be 100 percent. The Commanders play the Browns in the early window on Sunday, so we'll have a good idea of his status on Sunday morning.
